The UK’s internet minister Ed Vaizey’s constant appeal to all the firms to take the initiative and embrace IPv6 has finally persuaded Neelie Kroes, the EC Vice President to echo the same.

This issue was highlighted very firmly at the German IPv6 Summit 2011. Avoiding it may result in a total black out of web services. Anything which cannot grow poses the threat to be fully exhausted. With every passing day, IPv4 is approaching its day of complete exhaustion. IPv6 is an advanced version of IPv4 offering innovation and a huge space for new addresses.

The current addressing system that is being used is IPv4. As people have become more and more dependent on the web, it puts a lot of pressure on the public authorities to maintain connectivity.  The requirement of providing information anytime anywhere creates a demand for new addresses. Unfortunately, until now the adoption of IPv6 has been very slow. Authorities need to understand that it is not a matter of choice any more. Delay in action is only causing it to be consumed more rapidly by the day. IPv4 will soon be over, paralyzing everything, if proper action is not taken right away.

Kroes mentioned that public authorities need to come forward and initiate the whole process asap. The EC itself shifted to IPv6 on 8 June, that is, the world’s IPv6 day.
