Rural areas will have to spend some more time without the broadband connection. This revelation has come to the fore when, not so long ago, a pressure group conducted a survey. According to Countryside Alliance, four schemes that aimed at bringing broadband to the remote areas: North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Herefordshire, Scottish Highlands and Islands of the UK have hardly progressed since the time these were launched. These four schemes were initiated in October 2010.
As per the response to Freedom Of Information (FOI) requests, councils of Highlands and Islands and Herefordshire have still not moved ahead with the projects at all. Criticizing the delays the Countryside Alliance’s chief executive, Alice Barnard, stressed on the fact that the amount of £40 m pound, which has been facilitated towards these projects, is no good until it is spent towards the goal.
In this regard, apart from the Alliance, experts from the domains of IT and telecom have opined that councils have not only practical but also many technical issues to deal with. Observers also point out that the stagnation will continue until the time the government waits for people to bring up the demand for broadband.
Communities that are eager to enter the world of affordable, broadband internet have formed their broadband networks. According to Thinkbroadband’s Ferguson Wales, Davon and Somerset have already received grants for broadband connectivity.
