Computer parts in plain english

Computer Info Sign
A very common phrase in our repair center is:
"Oh no, my computer doesn't work anymore , I can't believe I lost all my pictures." - Don't worry your valuable pictures are most likely safe!

What defines the computer speed?

There are many parts that define the computer speed ,
but the 2 main ones are the CPU and the RAM Memory.

Computer CPU Computer RAM
The CPU(processor) is the brain of the computer and it does all the the calculations.
Everything you see on your computer is a result of all these calculations . Skype MSN, Word , Powerpoint , Outlook Express - they all work and show on your screen as a results of these calculation that the CPU does. The CPU works in tight connection with the RAM memory and in simple words every window(application) that is open on your computer is executed from the CPU and loaded into the RAM memory.

There is a very simple example.
for example when you want to solve a math calculation:
Add 3 to 5
the result divide by 2
the result add to 10
the result divide by 5
and so on .....

to calculate an equation millions and millions of lines you will need to write down every line and calculate it step by step.
This is where the RAM memory comes in place. The CPU writes and reads to the RAM memory in order to solve these equations.

Computer Warning Sign
The size of the RAM memory defines how many applications you can run at a given time and the speed of the CPU defines how quickly these applications will be calculated and their window will open

The difference between RAM memory and HDD Memory

Computer Hard Drive

Computer Speed

Computer Speed

Load Software

There are 3 main differences between the Hard Drive and The RAM:
  • When the computer is switched off, the RAM will be emptied, because it cannot keep its content without the power source. The HDD is not power dependent and therefore keeps all the information even when the computer is switched off.
  • The RAM memory reads and writes 50 times faster than the HDD
  • The Ram Memory doesn't have any moving components and it is not shock sensitive. The HDD memory has a spinning disk and it is easily damaged when dropped or shocked.

To summarize we will give you few examples:
For example if you save a movie to your RAM memory it will save 50 times faster than the HDD , but when you power down you computer it will be lost because the RAM memory looses its content when it is off - it is power dependent.

The same movie saved on the HDD will take a lot longer , but it is not lost when the computer is switched off - it is not power dependent

Theoretically when you start a program it can be loaded onto the hard drive but it will take too long so that is why all the programs are loaded onto the RAM memory and all files are saved on the HDD.

So the answer to the most common question is:

Computer Warning Sign

Even if you computer is completely dead there is 99% chance that your files are still safely stored on your hard drive.
The Hard drive is independent part of you computer and doesn't loose its content if the computer is damaged . The HDD malfunction when shocked, reaches end if its life span, or in very, very rare cases on mains power cuts.

The principles of VIP Consult are:
  1. Professionalism
  2. Responsibility
  3. Precision
  4. Clarity

Will I lose all my data?
No, not if the hard disk is not faulty (95% of cases).
If the hard disk has failed, data recovery may still be possible but this can be quite time consuming, will carry additional cost and cannot be guaranteed to be 100% successful.
Please back up your data before shipping, or if not possible we can do this for a minimal charge.
Are my documents safe while you work on the computer?
For remote repair we use the latest security encryption for the connection which ensures confidentiality and privacy.
How do I pay?
No advanced payment is due until the service is complete.Every customer is provided with a full invoice and payment can be done cash or using a debit or credit card.
Which regions do you cover and where are you based ?

Our main office is located in Bournemouth (South west), but we offer our services for customers anywhere in the UK.

How long is the repair?

Most repairs are the same or next day service, unless when additional parts need to be ordered, which usually takes 3-5 days for the delivery.

For remote Repair, do I have to stay in front of the computer while you are fixing it ?
Not at all, once connected we can solve the problem without your interaction. However, you can watch how the problem is fixed if you choose.
