Why Dell Laptop wouldn't charge the battery ?

All modern Dell laptops need to detect the charger type and power capacity to allow charging the battery. If you look closely the charger has a small middle pin which sends a signal to the laptop to identify itself. If this pin is broken or the charger is faulty the laptop cannot identify the charger type and it will refuse to charge the battery.

You can check if the adapter is identified by pressing the F2 button when powering up the laptop and looking in the bios charger type info.Unknown Device Installed means it doesn't detect the charger.
There are few reasons why it doesn't detect the charger: the middle pin of the charger is broken, the charger is faulty or the charger is not genuine. The worst case will be if the power socket connection inside the laptop is damaged .

If the laptop detects the charger type it means that your battery needs replacing. All battery generally last 3-5 years depending on the usage so if you battery is older than this you probably need another battery.

Computer Battery Charging

Dell doesn't detect charger

So we can summarize it to 3 main reasons

  • Faulty or incorrect charger Check in bios if the charger is detected. Replace the charger, if it is not detected. Replace the battery, if the charger is detected

  • Flat Battery Replace the battery, if the charger is detected in the BIOS , but the battery always remain on 0% when charging

  • After replacing with a genuine Dell Charger the laptop still doesn't detect the charger. This means that the middle pin of the power socket doesn't connect to the motherboard properly. Motherboard is multy layered and replacing the power socket will not help so in this case you need to solder a wire bridge for the middle pin. Some motherboards have separate charging board, which can be replaced , but in any case it needs to be done by a specialist.
