PC HDD types

External Hard Drives
The main parameter of the Hard Drive is its capacity. This parameter indicates the amount of information it cat store. It is measured in MegaBytes , Gigabytes and Terabytes. These days the most common sizes vary from 40GB to 3TB. Hard Drives are manufactured in 4 different physical sizes:
1.8″ - used in some small laptops, netbooks and ipods. They are manufactured to the maximum capacity of 320Gb
2.5" - used on 99% of all laptops and netbooks on the market. They are manufactured to the maximum capacity of 1TB
3.5" - Only Used for Desktop Computers and Servers. They are manufactured to the maximum capacity of 3TB

The most common HDD connectors - interfaces are IDE and SATA . The latest hard drive use SATA which is faster and the cost of the hard drives with this interface is significantly cheaper that IDE
Any HDD can also be used as an external Hard drive using a special enclosure that converts the SAT or IDE interface to USB so you can connect it to any of your computer USB ports. The advantage of the 1.8" and 2.5" Hard Drives is that they can be powered only from the USB port eliminating the need of an extra power supply adapter.
