There are few main optical drive types: CD readers , CD Writers , DVD Readers, DVD Writers, BluRay Readers, BluRay Writers and Combo Drives. As the name indicates the first only reads discs and the second reads and writes to it.
Any drive is made using mechanical parts to hold the disk , a motor to spin it and a laser with an optical lenses to read or write to it.



When the drive is used in dusty environment, the optical lens needs to be cleaned every few months as they are very sensitive to dust.
All drives are consumable part meaning that after few years of work depending on how much you use it for reading or writing discs.
